March 31, 2017
While it has been sometime since my last message to the membership, I would like to bring you up to date on recent and upcoming Chamber activities.
The Chamber’s first major event of the year was the annual Business Excellence Awards banquet. Close to 250 guests from our business community enjoyed an evening of excellence as a number of firms and individuals were honoured for their outstanding contribution to Cornwall’s economic growth and prosperity.
Of note was the selection of the 2016 Citizen of the Year, Dr. Rachel Navaneelan. Dr. Navaneelan’s contribution to our community and in particular, many of our young and vulnerable, has made her a shining light in the Cornwall and a most fitting recipient of this distinguished award. I would also like to recognize members of the Chamber team for their efforts in presenting a highly successful evening.
Following the Awards banquet, the Chamber’s next event was its Annual General Meeting and the election of its 2017 Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Although there was an election looming, a last minute withdrawal by one of the nominees resulted in an acclamation.
Mark Begg – Delaney Bus Lines, Shawn Filion – Desjardins Wealth Management, Meagan MacDonald – McDougall Hunt Insurance Brokers were acclaimed for another term and the Board welcomed new Directors, Milena Cardinal from Cardinal Law and Todd Lihou from Heart of the City.
Following the AGM, a meeting of the new Board was held with elections to the Executive Committee. I’m pleased that the Board demonstrated its confidence by electing me to a second term as President and I am joined on the Executive Committee by 1st Vice President Meagan MacDonald, 2nd Vice President, Lesley Lang and Treasurer, Shawn Filion. Denis Carr remains as the Chamber’s Past President.
Our next big event is the Spring Home and Leisure Show scheduled to kick off on Friday, April 7. Chamber staff have informed me the Show is a complete sellout and there are hopeful exhibitors on a waiting list we are trying to accommodate, space permitting. It promises to be a terrific way to welcome spring and I’m looking forward to being there.
I’d like to keep members in the loop about some upcoming events. Esca Restaurant will host the April 25 PubNite with Summerheights slated for May 30. The Chamber’s annual Golf Day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1 at Summerheights Golf Links.
