Hello everyone, there is no doubt in my mind that we have all found it to be a long cool spring. You’re chamber team has been hard at work and we have a couple of hot topics on the horizon.
Marijuana in the workplace. A number of experts have reported that businesses have yet to fully understand the serious implications, once the drug is legalized. The Chamber has noted this concern and is taking action.
On Wednesday, May 9, the Chamber will host a luncheon with a special guest speaker, one considered to be an expert in the field of marijuana in the workplace. The event will be held at the Ramada beginning at 12 noon. Businesses can register by calling the Chamber or, register, on-line by visiting our web site. I encourage the business community to attend this important event.
The second event will be an all-candidates debate leading up to the June 7 provincial election. Candidates from the three parties currently sitting in the Legislature will be invited to attend the debate that will be held on Wednesday, May 23 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The Chamber’s letter to the Mayor and Council expressing concern about the budgeted tax increase appears to have made an impact. Councilors who opposed the tax increase all made reference to the letter as the budget was deliberated around the Council table.
Tax increases are only part of the Chamber’s concern about small business survival. A survey we recently conducted revealed that the 32% minimum wage increase over 18 months could put a number of businesses in peril. The finalized 3.97% municipal tax increase will do little to lessen that peril.
On a more positive note, the Chamber Pub Nights are proving to be a highly popular event for our business community. The April Pub Night was hosted by Phil Gilmour at Stomping Grounds with a huge crowd joining in for munchies and networking.
It was great to hear so many positive comments about what a great evening it was. I’m looking forward to another great crowd at the May 29 Pub Night when Mike, RJ, Melanie and Alyssa at ESCA Gourmet Pizza + Bar will be our hosts.
Upcoming events. Besides the marijuana in the workplace luncheon and the all candidates debate, mark your schedule for the Chamber’s annual Golf Day on Wednesday, June 6. Once again, Summerheights will be your hosts and Chamber staff tell me that area business professionals have already begun to register for the day.
